Pontefract is where Pinkerton Property started and where our main base still is, out at Upton in the WF9 villages. Pontefract, Upton, South Elmsall, South Kirkby, Hemsworth, Ackworth, Featherstone and Knottingley are all a short drive, and it is the area where we can usually get out to look at a job quickest.
The housing here covers everything from Victorian terraces around the town centre and the old colliery villages to big estates of 1930s and postwar semis and the newer developments that have gone up on former pit land. Most of them share one thing: a front garden that would make a better driveway and a back garden that has never been properly finished.
What Pontefract ground does to a garden
Pontefract sits on the magnesian limestone ridge, so a lot of gardens here have shallow, stony, free draining soil over rock. That is good news for drainage and less good for lawns, which dry out and struggle in summer. Drop down towards Knottingley and the Aire and the ground turns to heavy clay that holds water all winter.
It means the base under a driveway or patio has to be built for the ground you actually have. On the limestone we are often digging into rock; on the clay we are building in drainage and a deeper sub-base. We know both because we work on both every week.
