Our third base is just outside York, which is how a Pontefract company ends up covering the whole of Yorkshire rather than one corner of it. Acomb, Dringhouses, Fulford, Heworth, Huntington, Haxby, Copmanthorpe, Bishopthorpe and the villages out towards Selby and Tadcaster are all regular ground for us.
York's housing runs from Victorian terraces off Bishopthorpe Road and in South Bank, through the 1930s semis of Acomb and Rawcliffe, to the large new estates at Germany Beck and around the ring road. Many of the older houses have long, narrow gardens that have never been properly laid out.
Flat ground, high water
York sits in the Vale of York on flat clay and river deposits, with a high water table and well known flooding along the Ouse and Foss. Gardens here hold water, and anything laid without thought for drainage ends up sitting in it. Every drive, patio and lawn we lay around York is built on a free draining base with falls that take water away from the house.
